The Sea, the sea

Burning sun,
intense 3D light,
welcome shade,
gentle breezes,
cold beer.

Upon asking for another,
the woman dispenses wisdom…
“Yes, one is never enough…”
I am admonished.

Behind her, the most beautiful coffee machine in all the world,
Its naked engineering proclaiming function, not pretence.
As curator of my life, I add it to my personal museum.

But earlier,
the newly risen sun is disguising her malice,
Pretending to be benign.
The surface of the sea…
Like the surface of the morning sea in Crete,
Like me, just waking up, still wrapped in silk,
Rising and falling, pushing and pulling the beach stones,
Slowly slowly smoothing them round…
The sound, the sound!

Inland,
a horizon of mountains,
impossibly high in the sky,
Just visible through the heat haze,
I am amazed!

Poseidon welcomes me,
I am,
After all,
In the land of the gods...

How to Eat a Tomato

First — remove plastic packaging, then eat . . .
Perfect accompaniment to practically every other food.
Particularly good with cheese.
